I express my praise to the Al-mighty, who has favoured me with this book, one of those received from the estate of my father and master, the great gaon Rabbi Eliezer Halevy, Rosh Yeshiva of Ohel Moshe ViYehudis in Ramsgate, known as Dr Loewe, disciple of the Torah princes Rabbi Mordechai Baneth and Rabbi Moshe Sofer ztl, the remarkable linguist and master of the house of the righteous prince Sir Moses Montefiore. He was his interpreter on all his great journeys to save his people ... London [1895] Yaakov Chaim HaLevy’.
This item was also in the possession of Chief Rabbi Dr J H Hertz, and has his bookplate in each volume.
Rabbi Eliezer Loewe (1809-1890), studied under Rabbi Mordechai Baneth and other leading rabbis. Scholar and linguist. Settled in London in 1836, and was subsequently appointed personal secretary of Sir Moses Montefiore. Author of a number of works, including diaries of his travels with Sir Moses Montefiore and related matters.
Chief Rabbi Joseph Tzvi Hertz (1872-1946), born in Hungary and studied in America. Appointed British Chief Rabbi in 1913. Author of Bible commentary and other works.
