(1820 - 1896) Attorney General of the Confederate States from 1864 to 1865. Captured at Key West and imprisoned at war's end. War-date D.S. as C.S.A. Attorney General, 5pp. legal folio, on rare 'Department of Justice' letterhead, Richmond, April 2, 1864, to the Confederate President JEFFERSON DAVIS. In response to Jefferson Davis's previous request, the Attorney General signs a lengthy legal opinion of whether 'the law adding to the compensation of officers a ration in kind, prohibits also the purchase of subsistence for his servant.'
