1928, black diagonal overprint "Spedizione Soccorso Aereo 10 Giugno 1928" (Air Rescue Expedition 10 June 1928) on Umberto Nobile label in brown, complete pane of nine with natural straight edges at sides, full OG, NH, VF and scarce multiple. The Umberto Nobile Arctic Expedition of the Airship "Italia" started from Ny-Ålesund in Svalbard (Spitsbergen) on May 23, flew over the North Pole, but crashed on the way back. Part of the crew died, the rest spent about a month on the ice in the camp, which became known as the "Red Tent". Several expeditions were organized to save the survivors; the last members of the Nobile Expedition were taken by the Soviet Ice-Breaker "Krasin" on July 12, Est. $500-$650
