The Polemic Work of R. Yehonasan Eibeschutz: Sefer Luchos Eidus, Altona 1755. First Edition.
Sefer Luchos Eidus was published by R. Yehonasan Eibeschutz in an effort to refute the charges against him made by R. Yaakov Emden. Additionally, he included the letters of recommendation which he had received from leading Rabbis and Torah Scholars who came to his defense and supported his position. Most famous among these letters is that of the Vilna Gaon, in which he expresses his support to R. Eibeschutz, although in his humility he is unsure why R. Eibeschutz asked his opinion.
Interestingly, R. Eibeschutz writes that he had decided to send one of his amulets to Vilna, since “I have heard there is one extraordinary individual residing within the city who is of great stature, pure and holy, an expert in all areas of Torah — hidden and revealed”. At the time R. Eibeschutz sought the Vilna Gaon’s opinion, he was all but 35 years old.
