HISTORIC LETTER! RABBI CHAIM MEIR YECHIEL SHAPIRA, REBBE OF DROHOBITSCH TO RABBI ARYEH LEIBISH HOROWITZ OF STANISLAWOW, SEEKING FUNDS FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE FIRST JEWISH BANK IN ERETZ YISRAEL.


In this interesting and historic letter, the Rebbe of Drohobitsch, who was a great lover of Eretz Yisrael and actively supported its residents and eventually settled there, informs the Rabbi of Stanislawow of the initiative of R. Moshe Chaim Bak, son of the famous Ruzhin chassid and leader of the chassidic community in Eretz Yisrael R. Nissan Bak, to establish a bank providing loans to residents of the Holy Land. He informs the recipient that this project has the support of his uncle, the Rebbe of Chortkov.

Rabbi Chaim Meir Yechiel Shapira (1864-1924), son of Rabbi Aviezra Zelig, and grandson of the Saraf of Mogelnitz and of Rabbi Avraham Yaakov of Sadagur. Rebbe of Drohobitsch and active proponent of settlement in Eretz Yisrael, taking up residence in Yerushalayim in 1922.

Rabbi Aryeh Leibush Horowitz (1847-1909) - Rabbi of Stanislawow, son of Rabbi Yitzchak of Ottynia, Zhurovna and Stanislau, ordained by Rabbi Yosef Shaul of Lemberg and Rabbi Chaim Halberstam of Sanz. Rabbi of Załoźce (1871), Stryj (1878) and as successor to his father in Stanislawow (1904). Author of Shaalos U’Teshuvos Harei Besamim and Mipi Aryeh.
