RABBI YEHUDA LANDAU, AV BETH DIN SADAGURA AND AUTHOR OF YAD YEHUDA – RARE SIGNED HANDWRITEEN LETTER REGARDING A DISPUTE BETWEEN RITUAL SLAUGHTERERS IN HORODENKA .

Letter dated 1879 and addressed to the Horodenka community regarding an attempt to appoint a Shochet unauthorised by the local rabbi, Rabbi Moshe Teumim. Rabbi Landau expresses shock and distress that in a community with such a distinguished rabbi and such fine shochtim, anyone should attempt to undermine their authority, and he appeals for peace.

Letters by Rabbi Yehuda Leib Landau are extremely scarce, and to the best of our knowledge have not appeared before at public auctions.

Rabbi Yehuda Leib Landau (1823-1900), son of Rabbi Yona of Grobowitz and son-in-law of R. Yisrael Iser Braunstein – who supported him for some years. Rabbi of Kalis, Mohilov and Sadagura (1865) – approved by the famous Rebbes of

Sadagura. Author of famous halachic works: Yad Yehuda.
