Rare letter by Rabbi Menachem Mendel Hager, the first Rebbe of Vizhnitz, to the Rebbe of Des, apologising for the fact that due to ill-health he was been unable to receive him with due respect and speak to him at length when they met at Szollosz (Selish).
Dated 1868.
In the letter, the Rebbe of Des is addressed with great respect by the Rebbe of Vizhnitz, ‘Yedid Hashem vi’yedid nafshi, Harav hagaon hamuvhak vehamefursam, charif ubaki, sinai ve’oker harim, amod hayemini, patish hachazak, pe’er hador ...’

Rabbi Menachem Mendel Hager of Vizhnitz (1830-1885), son of Rabbi Chaim Hager of Kossov, author of Toras Chaim, and son-in-law of Rabbi Yisrael of Ruzhin. Famous and greatly revered chassidic leader with large numbers of followers. Author of Tzemach Tzadik.

Rabbi Menachem Mendel Paneth (1818-1885), son and disciple of Rabbi Yechezkel of Karlsburg, author of Mareh Yechezkel. Disciple of the Chasam Sofer and of the Yismach Moshe. Rabbi of Orishar (1842) and Dés (1855). He was renowned as a miracle-working leader of his many chassidim, and was the author of Shaarei Tzedek, Mishpat Tzedek, Avnei Tzedek and Maaglei Tzedek. and the founder of the Kollel Ahavas Tzion – Rabbi Meir Baal Haness charity in Yerushalayim. He succeeded his father as Chief Rabbi of Transylvania.
