The veterinary companies belonged as independent supply troops to their superordinate association / their superordinate division and were subordinate to its senior veterinary officer militarily and professionally. In the course of the war, a number of veterinary companies - some reorganized, some disbanded divisions - were incorporated into the army and deployed as such.
At the beginning of the war there were three types of veterinary companies:The veterinary company according to KStN 1415 for the infantry divisions had a strength of six veterinary officers, one civil servant, 24 non-commissioned officers, 203 teams, 58 regular horses, 130 replacement horses and 21 horse-drawn vehicles (including two four-horse horse transport vehicles), six trucks for horse transport, three trucks for food , a car and three motorcycles.
The veterinary company according to KStN 1417 for the mountain divisions and partly for the hunter divisions had a strength of nine veterinary officers, one officer, 52 non-commissioned officers, 203 teams, 63 regular horses, 130 replacement horses and 7 horse-drawn vehicles (including two four-horse transport vehicles), eight trucks for the horse transport, three trucks for food, one car and five motorcycles.The veterinary company according to KStN 1415 (gek) for ground-based units had a strength of six veterinary officers, one civil servant, 24 non-commissioned officers, 196 teams, 58 regular horses, 130 replacement horses and 21 horse-drawn vehicles (including two four-horse horse transport vehicles), three trucks for horse transport, one Food truck, one car and three motorcycles.
In the course of the later savings in personnel and material, especially of motor vehicles, the war strength reports of the veterinary companies were repeatedly changed and shortened.

The tasks of the veterinary companies:

- The troops take over sick and wounded horses or horses that are no longer fit for service for other reasons- Treating sick and wounded horses
- Viewing of the horses taken over, selection of the animals to be deported to rear veterinary troops (mostly the army) due to the severity or length of the illness or with regard to the military situation and registration of these for acceptance by rear veterinary troops.
- Isolation and observation of the brought in and captured horses
- Creation of recreational opportunities for exhausted horses or horses in need of recreation
- Maintain and promote the level of training and strength of the replacement horses, issue of reserve horses to the troops according to the instructions of the superior command authority
- Supply of the troops with veterinary equipment, which was pushed from veterinary parks or taken from the veterinary supply wagon (sentence b).
- Education and training of veterinary staff.
