CIRCULAR LETTER TO JEWISH COMMUNITIES FROM THE PEKIDIM VE’AMARKALIM AND THE RABBIS OF HOLLAND REGARDING CONDITIONS IN THE HOLY LAND, 1835.

A detailed letter sent to Jewish communities by the Pekidim Ve’Amarkalim and the Dutch Rabbis describing the awful conditions being suffered by Jews in the Holy Land. The Jews of Tzfas suffered from attacks by the Arabs during the uprising of 1834 and the Teverya community was forced to pay an exorbitant ransom of 100,000 grush.
The letter warns against giving money to any emissary raising funds for this cause and urges that all funds be contributed only to their central appeal. The letter opposes the fundraising mission of R. Moshe Suzi, who travelled around Western Europe at the time.

[Amsterdam] 1835.

Signed by the Pekidim Ve’Amarkalim: R. Tzvi Hirsh Lehren, R. Avraham Printz, R. Zalman Rubens and R. Yaakov Meir Lehren.
Their letter is countersigned and supported by Rabbi Shmuel Bernstein, Rabbi of Amsterdam, Rabbi Yosef Asher Lemel, Rabbi of The Hague and Rabbi Eliyahu Tzvi Hirsh, Rabbi of Rotterdam.
Re. R. Moshe Suzi, see Yaari, pp. 650-651.

4 sides. 22 x 22.5 cm. Good condition.
