Rambam – Mishneh Torah, Venice 1574-1576. First Edition of Kessef Mishnah Commentary. A Complete Set.

A complete set of the highly sought after Mishneh Torah – Rambam, printed in Venice starting from 1574 until 1576. This monumental edition is the first edition with R. Yosef Karo’s classic Kessef Mishnah commentary. Complete in four volumes. The first three were printed in the lifetime of the author; the fourth completed only after his death. In fact, the editor mourns his death at the end of the fourth volume, stating how he had heard the terrible news of his passing on 13 Nissan 1575, and did not manage to complete it in time for the author to see.

This edition is also the first to include the Hasagos HaRa’avad as a separate commentary, which had first been printed together with the Maggid Mishnah and not alongside the Rambam itself.

It should be noted that R. Yosef Karo – who was then living in Safed – was initially hesitant to have his commentary printed in faraway Venice. For this reason, the editor gives a heartfelt thanks to R. Moshe Provençal of Mantua “who’s net reaches all the way to Safed” (i.e. who maintained close ties with the author). He explains that R. Moshe was instrumental in pushing him to bring his commentary to print. At the behest of the author himself, the commentary was meticulously edited and prepared for print by the famed R. Menachem Azariah of Fano, commonly known as the Rema MiPano. The actual text of the Rambam was also edited and prepared for print by none other than R. Avraham Menachem Porto of Verona – author of “Mincha Belulah”. As such, this edition is extremely important and is known for its accuracy.

A complete set of all four volumes in very good condition, bound in contemporary 18th century Venetian bindings. Page edges tinted green, probably in the 17th century or earlier. Printed on thick, white paper. Occasional light water stains to some leaves, otherwise in excellent condition.

Complete sets are rare, especially in a condition such as this.

Volume I: [22], 316 pp.
Volume II: [10], 217, [1] pp.
Volume III: [20], 451, [1] pp.
Volume IV: [10], 297, [9] pp.

Vinograd, Venice 600.
