LA FAYETTE GILBERT DU MOTIER: (1757-1834) Marquis de La Fayette. French Aristocrat and Military Officer. Close to George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, La Fayette fought in the American Revolutionary War. He later became a key figure in the French Revolution of 1789 and the July Revolution of 1830. D.S., Lafayette, one page, folio, Paris, 10th November 1789, to François Courtois, in French. Also signed by Jean Sylvain Bailly (1736-1793) French Mathematician, Astronomer and the first Mayor of the city of Paris. Guillotined for his participation in the Champ de Mars massacre. The partially printed document bearing the heading of the National Guard of Paris'', is an appointment of François Courtois as Lieutenant. Signed by La Fayette, in his capacity as General Commandant of the ''National Guard and by Bailly as Mayor of Paris. With paper seal affixed to the front lower right border. Folded. VG £500-800
