Long and Interesting Letters from Moshe Sharett to David Ben-Gurion – "Esek HaBish" – "Lavon Affair" and "Herut" Party
Three letters sent by Moshe Sharett to David Ben-Gurion:
1. Typewritten letter, with a number of lines added by hand. Addressed to the "Prime Minister" and signed by Sharett in initials. 6-7 June, 1956.
In this letter Sharett informs Ben-Gurion that he resigns from his position as Foreign Minister; resignation is planned for June 10; he asks Ben-Gurion to announce it in the Knesset, and notes that he cannot hide from Rosen (Pinchas Rosen, Minister of Justice) the reasons that led to his resignation (being serious disagreements – political and personal – between Sharett and Ben-Gurion). [1] leaf, 28 cm. Fair condition. Thin paper. Creases and tears at margins.
2. Draft of a long letter, handwritten by Sharett, addressed to the "Prime Minister" and signed by Sharett in initials. October 30, 1960.
In this letter Sharett responds to what Ben-Gurion wrote to him following an announcement that Sharett published in the newspaper, concerning the "Esek HaBish" ("Lavon Affair") and its investigation. Sharett writes in great length about his concerns regarding another investigation, and ends the letter with the words: "For the world it is unimportant who gave the order. What is important is that the deed was done. It is not important that a certain Minister of Defense was able to go in an unknown direction… what is important is that the top ranks of Israel's defense forces could be a 'breeding ground' for such horrible conspiracies".
[4] leaves + a leaf with a number of lines as an addition to page no. 2, 22 cm. Good condition. Some stains and creases.
3. A long letter handwritten by Sharett, addressed to "David Ben-Gurion" and signed by Sharett in initials. March 23, 1963.
In this letter Sharett responds to a letter which Ben-Gurion wrote to him two days earlier, regarding the question of "Herut" party joining the Directorate of the Zionist Organization.
[5] leaves, 24.5 cm. Good condition. Some stains and creases.
