A Carpet with Herzl's Portrait – The Weaving Workshop of the Alliance Israélite Universelle School – Jerusalem, Early 20th Century
A carpet with a portrait of Theodor Herzl, created at the weaving workshop of the Alliance Israélite Universelle School, Jerusalem. [ca. first decades of the 20th century].
A carpet in shades of red and yellow, similar to the Turkish prayer rugs. In its center, Herzl is seen leaning on the railing of the balcony, gazing at a procession of new immigrants. The walls of Jerusalem and the Tower of David, with the sun rising behind it, are seen in the background. At the marguns is a frame of vegetal decorations, with a star-of-David woven on its upper part.
111x61cm. Good condition. Tears and open tears in the corners of the carpet. Unraveling. The line of fringes on the lower part of the carpet is mostly missing.
