“Jerusalem” and “Zion” Embroidery
“Jerusalem” and “Zion” embroidery. [Ottoman Empire, early 20th century].
Linen, embroidery threads.
Rectangular fabric. The whole surface is covered with a colorful embroidery in brown, blue, green, orange and silver. Three Stars of David with the word “Zion” are embroidered along the fabric. Frame consists of the word “Jerusalem” (Hebrew) and a repetitive floral pattern. A brown ribbon is sewn along the borders.
The Ottomans added to such embroideries a crescent, a star and Sultan emblems while the Jews added well known Jewish symbols such as a Star of David with the word Zion and often the Tablets of the Law and a seven- branched Menorah.
180X46 cm. Overall good condition. Stains, hole on one Star of David in the center, unraveling of part of the ribbon.
