Hanukkah Lamp - Italy
Hanukkah lamp. Italy, [18th-19th century].
Cast brass.
Backplate resembles a stylized triangle, on the sides are rocaille ornamentations topped by an onion-shaped dome with a loop for hanging. In the center: two heraldic lions sticking out their tongues, around a goblet-shaped altar from which comes out a flame. Engraved on a band on the lower part: "Ki Ner Mitzva veTorah Or" (Hebrew). According to the scholar Mordechai Narkiss, this flame represents the "Holy Fire" where the miracle took place. This image follows the Hasmoneans book which was well know to Italian Jews at the time. The line of oil fonts, somewhat longer than the side panel, is attached to the backplate. The oil fonts are square with a pointed spout.
Height: 12.5 cm, good condition, damage and old repair to backplate.
For a similar lamp see: Narkiss, “Menoraht HaHanukkah”, plate IX, item 26.
