RABBI AVRAHAM YITZCHAK KOOK, RARE LETTER FROM LONDON AS RABBI OF THE MACHZIKEI HADASS COMMUNITY.

Letter dated 27th Teives 5678 [11th Jan. 1918] on official stationary giving the title of Rabbi of Yaffo and district, currently in exile at the Machzikei Hadass community in London’. Very few letters are known from Rabbi Kook from the period of his residence in London, and even fewer written on this stationery. The letter discusses receipts for charitable donations.

Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kook (1865-1935), Student of the Volozhin Yeshiva, ordained by the Aruch Hashulchan, son-in-law of Rabbi Aliyahu David Rabinowitz – Teomim ‘Aderes’. Rabbi of Zeimel (1888), Buisk (1895) and Yaffo (1904). Left Eretz Yisrael in 1914 for Switzerland to attend the Agudas Yisrael convention, but due to the outbreak of WWI the convention was cancelled and he could not return home, and spent the war years in London as Rabbi of the Machzikei Hadass community. After his return to Eretz Yisrael he established his yeshiva Merkaz Harav Kook.
