LONG SIGNED HANDWRITTEN RABBINICAL LETTER FROM THE ‘ROGACHOVER’ - RABBI YOSEF ROSEN OF DVINSK TO RABBI MORDECHAI DOV ROGOSNITZKY, RABBI OF CARDIFF IN HIS YOUTH, WHILE HE STUDIED AT THE YESHIVA OF TELZ.
The letter, dated 1930, discusses the rabbinical laws on ‘chalipin’ with regard to an article returning to its original owner. Most letters by the Rogatchover are brief and limited to refrences and short comments, whereas in this responsum, he writes at length about the halachic question raised.
Letters with this kind of content are rare.
Rabbi Yosef Rosen (1858-1936), born to a Lubavitcher chassidic family in Rogatchev, known as a child prodigy, ‘the iluy of Rogatchev’. Studied in Shklov under Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin. Rabbi of the chassidic community in Dvinsk from 1889, and famous throughout the Jewish world for his phenomenal knowledge of all areas of Torah and his unique responsa containing references to sources throughout Torah literature.
