An Antique Japanese Satsuma Meiji Period Plate
Depicting a castle in the picturesque background and Gods looking down from the sky. Underside has floral designs, crackled background and dotted patterns, brown underglaze mark. Ca. Late 19th Century. Size d: 3 1/2 in., h: 1 in. Provenance: Collection of Edward Hyers Clayton (1886-1946). American writer and missioner. E.H. Clayton and his wife were missionaries of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society in charge of Wayland Academy, a missionary school in Hangzhou, China from 1912 to 1942. E.H. Clayton wrote a book Heaven Below based on his living experience in China.
