Large Pair of Indonesian Javanese Hand-Carved & Painted Wooden Wedding Figures – Loro Blonyo Style – Approx. 60cm High - An impressive pair of large Indonesian carved and polychrome-painted wooden figures, in the traditional Javanese Loro Blonyo style, depicting a seated male and female couple in ceremonial dress. The female figure wears an elaborate patterned batik-style skirt, decorative bodice and jewellery, with finely painted facial features and hair arranged in a traditional bun. The male figure wears a distinctive tall red ceremonial headdress, yellow upper garment, patterned batik-style lower dress and ornamental accessories, including a traditional Javanese-style keris dagger represented at the back of his waist. Both figures are depicted in formal seated positions, with their hands resting upon their knees, and display detailed hand-painted decoration throughout. Traditionally associated with Javanese wedding customs, harmony and prosperity, Loro Blonyo figures are often displayed as a symbolic couple within the home. Approximately 60cm high each. Both exhibit surface wear, paint rubbing, scratches, minor chips and age-related marks, particularly around the bases and projecting details. Exact age and origin unverified.
