Pair of jade pendants, Han dynasty

Pair of jade pendants in the form of an exempt animal. Both lions are standing on their paws, tail curled, head leaning to one side with their chin on the shoulder, mouth half-open and a cub on its back. It shows details in relief. In general, the carving is of high quality. In good condition with patina.

The traditional Chinese concept of "太师少师" (Tài shī shao shī) is very widespread in the arts, although it comes from architecture, and refers to a lion or lioness holding a cub. The difference in size is always emphasized between them. Lion and master are pronounced in the same way "Tài shī shao shī" and therefore the meaning of a lion as a master is taken. In addition, a large lion next to a small lion signifies the desire to succeed. Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD).

Size: 3.6 x 3.6 x 5.3 cm; Total weight: 166 gr.
