Italian School S. XVI
"Nativity"
Embossed, silver and gilt bronze plaque. It represents the Holy Family before a classical architecture and two angels looking at the child. in the sky an angel surrounded by a beam of light carries a phylactery with the Latin inscription "Glory to God in the highest and on earth". Hispano-Flemish style frame following 17th century models in ebonized wood with curly molding and bronze appliqués and mirrors.
We can find a certain parallelism with a plaque in the collection of the Lázaro Galdiano Museum with inventory number 00427 "Adoration of the Shepherds" attributed to Gian Federigo Bonzagna both for the presence of classical architectural elements, the arrangement of the figures, the non-gilt carnations for highlight them and the aesthetics of the figures.
This type of metal plates became popular in Renaissance Italy for decorative purposes with mostly religious and mythological themes, although they are also made with commemorative intentions. In the middle of the 16th century in Italy they cease to be fashionable, being the peak of these works in France to become popular in Germany during the 17th century. Those of a religious theme were almost always part of tabernacles, holders or reliquaries and the mythological ones were used to decorate furniture, boxes and other objects.
