Miguel Cabrera (Antequera de Oaxaca, Mexico, 1715 / 1720 - Mexico, 1768)
"The Divine Shepherdess"
Oil on canvas. Signed. 104 x 81 cm.
This divine shepherdess is comparable to the one painted on copper by Miguel Cabrera, which is kept in Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, USA.
Cabrera was one of the most renowned painters in the New-Hispanic art world. Little is known of his youth. The first news about him is from 1739, the year of his marriage to Ana María Solano. We also know of his move to Juan Correa’s workshop in the capital of the Viceroyalty.
Archbishop Rubio was Cabrera’s patron and named him his painter of the chamber. He was also painter to the Society of Jesus, painting many artworks for their churches.
In 1753 he was named life-president of the Academia de San Carlos.
His work can be seen in many churches and convents in Mexico. Two of his images of Our Lady of Guadalupe can be found in the Vatican Museum. Another, created in 1756, for the temple Saint Francis Xavier, is kept at the Museo Nacional del Virreinato, Mexico.
