The tradition of naturalist illustration dates back to the Renaissance and reflected a desire to document nature in all its details, varieties and in all its splendor, demanding enormous precision from artists.
The French painter Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) dedicated himself exclusively to the botanical arts in watercolors that became famous. Adored and admired by Parisian high society, he was nicknamed the Raphael of flowers. JP Redouté is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of all time.
These engravings transport those who view them to an era of past magnificence and teeming with discoveries.
