The Gaon Rav Rabbi Baruch Halevi Mendelbaum, Reb Bruchel Torover (1835-1905) - the son of the Dayan Rabbi Mordechai Yehuda Leib of Vladvoky. Rabbi Baruch served as Av Beis Din of Torov, Stolin and Matzyov and was a famed Gaon, Darshan and Chassid, one of the leading disciples of the holy Rav Rabbi Ahron of Karlin the Beis Aharon and his son the holy Rav Rabbi Asher of Karlin Stolin. In 1874, he immigrated from Russia to Jerusalem, where he founded the Or Chadash yeshiva. In 1891 was sent as a Shadar of the Kollelim of Jerusalem to Europe and managed to recruit the Tzaddik philanthropist of Frankfurt, Reb Shimon Wolf Rothschild, to support them. Author of Sifrei Nodah Bashe'arim (two sections - 1904, 1992). His son Reb Simcha Mendelbaum was one of the builders of the Jewish settlement outside the walls of Jerusalem. The Mandelbaum Gate - the only checkpoint between Israel and Jordan during the years 1948-1967 - was named after his house.
