D'Oyly (Calcutta, India) - Government House from St. Andrew's Library
This rare, large folio, hand-colored lithograph is from Sir Charles D'Oyly's Views of Calcutta and its environs. The work was published in London in 1848 by W. Robert & Lowes Dickinson. The work truly illustrates the beauty of Calcutta including its architectural heritage and topographical growth as it was in the 1830s. The work was put together posthumously for publication by George Francis White.

Sir Charles D'Oyly (1781-1845) was an administrator in India and artist. His family was British but he was born at Murshidabad, India before returning to England in 1785. He sailed back to India in 1797 with introductions from Warren Hastings. He fell under the friendship and instruction of George Chinnery, another skilled artist. He was one of the best amateur artists in Calcutta in the 1800s and went on to paint more views of Indian life in the city than any other contemporary artist. William Princep wrote of D'Oyly: "Many were the happy hours all lovers of the brush spent at the hospitable house of Sir Chas D'Oyly, himself an excellent artist, where Chinnery was a frequent and welcome guest."

The work is in very good condition overall. There are some smudges or marks mostly the margins. There may be a few minor imperfections or faint marks to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.
