Arrowsmith & Lewis - Map of the United States
This engraved map is from Aaron Arrowsmith & Samuel Lewis's A New and Elegant General Atlas. Comprising all the new discoveries, to the present time... The work was published in Boston in 1812 by Thomas & Andrews.

This was a scarce, early American atlas that helped with mapping out the American West. The work was a collaboration of American mapmaker Samuel Lewis and English mapmaker Aaron Arrowsmith. Four of the most important maps from the work were titled: North America, Louisiana, British Possessions in America, and Spanish Possessions in North America. Lewis's map of Louisiana was "... the primary map of the newly purchased territory of Louisiana and its surroundings and, as such, reflected the shaped American popular geographical images of the western interior at the time of Lewis and Clark." (Mapping the West, p. 80

Provenance: Henry Roice (contemporary signature was present on the front pastedown)

The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. There may be a few minor imperfections or faint marks to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.
