Sanson - 5 Maps of Africa (Egypt, Barca, Tunis & Tripoli, Morocco, & Barbary & Alger)
This strong map engraving is from the Dutch edition of Nicolas d'Abbeville Sanson's Cartes Generales de Toutes les Parties du Monde. The work was published in Utrecht in 1683 for the author.

The atlas was first published in 1658 and was considered the first French world atlas. It featured numerous maps including several world maps, continental maps, parts of the Americs, India, China, Japan, and numerous European countries and territories.

Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) was oft considered the father of French cartography. He produced over 300 maps in his career, noted for their sharp style and research. He first introduced the atlas / map featured here in 1658, with his son, Guillame Sanson, continuing this publication posthumously.
