Mallet - Map of the South Pole
This historic engraving is from Allain Manesson Mallet's Beschreibung des ganzen Welt Kreises or Description de L'Univers. The work was published in Frankfurt by Johann Adam Jung in 1719. This edition used the original French engravings but re-engraved with German names. The work was an early exploration of geography and cosmography. The illustrations feature views, costumes, professions, ships, animals, antiquities, maps, and portraits of rulers.

Allain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706) was a French soldier. He served under King Louis XIV as an inspector of fortifications. He would later be appointed as a mathematics teacher int he King's court. The work presented here is what he would be most noted for in history.
