This first edition, scarce bird chromolithograph is from Leopold Joseph Fitzinger's Wissenschaftlich-populäre Naturgeschichte der Vögel which was part of the series entitled Bilder-Atlas zur wissenschaftlich-populären Naturgeschichte der Säugethiere, Fische, Amphibien und Vögel in ihren sämmtlichen Hauptformen The work was published in Vienna between 1860 and 1864 by the Imperial and Royal Court and State Printing Office. The work illustrated birds from around the world.

Leopold Joseph Fitzinger (1802-1884) was an Austrian zoologist. He started his career at the age of 15 working for the Natural History Museum of Vienna. He re-organized the reptile and fish collections when it was in the process of becoming a scientific research instituted. His name was commemorated in the scientific names of five reptiles.

Provenance: Anni and Toni Halik, bookplate was present on the front cover; A. Oelzelt, owner's stamp was present on the recto title pages of the text volume
