The Decree Against Shechita in Germany-
Letter from Rav Yehoshua Leib Shilel- Av Beis Din of Pezinok
Halachic answer by Rav Yehoshua Shilel- Av Beis Din of Pezinok regarding 'stunning the cattle' before shechita, in order to prevent 'tzaar baaley chaim', ("pain") and in this way- the German government would not prevent Jewish shechita. In his letter, Rav Yehoshua concludes that it is Assur and may cause the animal to become treif before its shechita.
Rav Yehoshua Leib Shilel, Av Beis Din of Pezinok (5644-5704) author of 'Minhagei Chasam Sofer', was a disciple of the Ksav Sofer in the Yeshiva Gedola of Pressburg and was a Maggid in Vienna and the Av Beis Din of Pezinok.
The letter was sent to his friend from youth, Rav Baruch Kunsdadt, a dayan in Fulda.
