Bidspirit auction | Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany Balloon Mantel
Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany Balloon Mantel Clock - A French-made Edwardian-period mantel clock housed in a mahogany balloon-shaped case, reflecting the Sheraton Revival style popular in the early 20th century. The case is decorated with boxwood stringing and a central inlaid marquetry patera in the form of a sunburst motif. It stands on a stepped rectangular plinth base with a vertical wood grain. The circular dial features an engine-turned (guilloché) sunburst pattern emanating from the centre, protected by a convex glass lens and a polished brass bezel. The dial is printed with black Arabic numerals and features steel spade-style hands. A printed mark at the base of the dial below the numeral 6 reads MADE IN FRANCE. The clock uses a mechanical movement, likely an 8-day time-only mechanism, wound from the rear as there are no winding apertures present on the dial face.
