German WWII Staff Map from the Boiler near Cholm
Battle of Cholm - encirclement of Wehrmacht troops by the Red Army near the city of Cholm, south of Leningrad, lasting from January 23 to May 5, 1942.
Retreating German forces from the battle of Moscow were encircled at Diemiansk and at Kholm.
About 5,500 German soldiers were found in the lap near Cholm.
The cut off units were supplied by German aviation.
Nikolai Watutin's troops attacked the encircled units, but suffered heavy losses.
German general Scherer tried to break free from the boiler three times. The first two attempts in January and March ended in failure, but the third attempt in May enabled the evacuation of some of the severed troops.
