On the canvas inscribed by the artist: "312 / Herbert Rolf Schlegel / Polsnitz IX. 1919 / "Auf schattiger Wiese".
Schlegel himself dates the painting to September 1919 and places the depiction in Polsnitz in Silesia. This makes this depiction of a young woman in a white dress against a late summer landscape a very personal work: it depicts Elisabeth Petersen, whom he married in 1919 in what is now Pelczinca. Schlegel met the daughter of the painter Wilhelm Petersen while still a student and moved to Kassel with her shortly afterwards.
