Erwin Puchinger was an Austrian graphic artist and painter. He came from a family of officers and civil servants. Puchinger attended the Schild painting school in Vienna and, from 1891/92, evening classes at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt. From 1892 to 1901, he attended the Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Applied Arts) at Österreichisches Museums für Kunst und Industrie (Austrian Museum of Art and Industry). From 1896, he was a student of Franz Matsch; he then continued his studies in Paris and London. From 1901, he worked as a teacher, from 1908 as a professor of drawing, and from 1933 as head of the department of manual graphics at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt. During that time, he became a member of the Vienna Secession. In Paris and London, he worked with the architect Otto Prutscher. In 1900, one of Puchinger's major works was selected for the Austrian Pavilion at the Paris World's Fair. In 1912, he was accepted as a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. During the First World War, from 1916 to 1918, Puchinger worked as a war painter in the k.u.k. Kriegspressequartier (Imperial-Royal War Press Office), designing, for example, posters for war bonds. In addition to his work as a painter, he also designed postage stamps. In contrast to his graphic and applied arts work, his paintings are naturalistic and feature strict color palettes in their depiction of landscapes and scenes from rural life. Puchinger retired in 1936. He received numerous honors and awards (in 1943 he received the Veit Stoss Prize from the City of Nuremberg). Puchinger was buried in the Pötzleinsdorf Cemetery. His wife, Elfriede Puchinger-Hoffmann, was also a painter and graphic artist. Puchinger's works are held in the following collections: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Albertina, Vienna; and Heeresgeschichtliches Museum (Military History Museum), Vienna. - Rudolf von Alt, son of the vedute painter Jakob Alt and his wife Maria Anna Schaller, was an Austrian painter and watercolorist. His younger brother Franz Alt was also a painter. Rudolf Alt learned from his father in his workshop and, as a child, coloured his father's lithographs. His father often took him with him on his travels. The high point of the collaboration between father and son was the so-called peep-box pictures for the future Emperor Ferdinand I. From 1825 to 1832, Alt studied at the Vienna Academy, from 1826 in Josef Mössmer's landscape class. He soon received a first prize there and exhibited there for the first time in 1830. In 1835, Alt met Moritz von Schwind and the Bavarian King Ludwig I in Italy. In 1848, Alt became a member of the Academy. In 1948, Alt also volunteered for service as a citizen's guard in Vienna. When the situation seemed too precarious, he fled Vienna that autumn with Ludwig Passini. Alt undertook study trips to the Crimea, Germany, and Italy. In 1867, he became a member of the Berlin Academy and in 1879 a professor at the Vienna Academy. In 1897 he was a founding member and honorary president of the Vienna Secession. In the same year he successfully applied for elevation to the nobility. He was acquainted with the writers Ludwig Anzengruber and Vinzenz Chiavacci. Alt depicted St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna 100 times. His depictions of Hans Makart's studio also became well known. Besides his numerous watercolors, Alt painted relatively few oil paintings. A catalogue raisonné of his approximately 150 oil paintings was not published until 2011. Among his patrons was the art collector Jakob Gsell. Honours: 1875 Reichel Prize of the Academy for his complete works, 1877 Archduke Carl Ludwig Medal, 1892 Order of the Iron Crown IIIrd Class, 1892 Honorary Membership of the Academies of Vienna and Berlin, 1894 Grand Gold State Medal, 1897 Honorary President of the Vienna Secession, 1897 Raised to the nobility as "Knight of Alt", 1907 Naming of Rudolf von Alt Square in Vienna-Landstrasse, 1908 Honorary grave at Vienna Central Cemetery, designed by Josef Engelhart; 1912 Monument at Vienna's Minoritenplatz, designed by Hans Scherpe.- Until 1913/1914, Peter Breithut worked primarily as a medalist, after which he turned to painting and graphics. Breithut received training as a goldsmith, in 1887/1888 he attended a special course in chasing art at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts with S. Schwarz, and in 1897/1998 he briefly studied sculpture at the Vienna Academy with E. Hellmer. After studying in France in 1912 and 1913, he worked primarily as a painter and graphic artist. From 1902 to 1921, he was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus, and until 1914 he also exhibited at the Vienna Secession. From 1920 to 1930, Breithut was a member of the Hagenbund; a memorial exhibition with watercolours and portrait drawings was organized there for him in 1930. He was married to the painter Eugenie Breithut-Munk. Portrait medal selection: “Archduke Franz Salvator”, “Kaspar von Zumbusch”, “Court actress Babette Devrient”. Some of his works are included in the collections of Albertina, Vienna Museum, coin cabinet of the Vienna Art History Museum, medal collection Museum Francisco Carolinum Linz.
