Tibor Gergely war a Hungarian painter, graphic artist, illustrator and caricaturist. As a painter, until 1939, he created primarily landscapes, depictions of the rural population of Slovakia and Hungary, as well as socially critical topics; after that he was primarily an illustrator of children's books in the USA. Apart from a short study in lithography, he is self-taught. From 1919 he lived together in Vienna with Anna Lesznai as his life partner, already before 1919 in Budapest, and then in Vienna a member of the “Sonntagkreis”, which included both visual artists and writers (including Georg Lukacs, Robert Musil, Heimito von Doderer, Anna Lesznai). 1920-1931, worked freelance in Vienna as a painter, cartoonist for the Viennese daily newspaper “Der Tag”, as well as co-founder and employee of the avant-garde theater “Gong” (set and costume designer, choreographer). In 1931, he returned to Budapest and spent the summer painting in Körtvelyes (today Hrusov) on the estate of his future wife Anna Lesznai (married in New York in 1941). Represented in the Hagenbund for the first time in 1923, a member of the Hagenbund from 1927 to 1938 and a member of the Budapest Artists' Association KUT. The first illustrations for children's books before 1930. In 1939, he emigrated to New York with Anna Lesznai. In the USA, he created mainly illustrations for children's books in the series “The Golden Books”. Works include Albertina, Vienna Museum, Hungarian National Gallery Budapest, Lajos Hatvany Museum in Hatvan (Hungary), Fogg Museum in Cambridge-Massachusetts, Wellesley College Art Museum (USA).
