Collection of [7] Letters from Rabbi Yisrael Binyamin Bassan, Av Beit Din of Reggio and Disciple of the Ramcha"l
Collection of letters in Italian signed - in Hebrew - by the gaon Rabbi Yisrael Binyamin Bassan, Av Beit Din of Reggio and disciple of the Ramcha"l. Text of the signature: "Yosef Binyamin son of the honorable Rabbi Yeshayahu Bassan ztzuk"l ..." Reggio, 18th century.
The famous gaon Rabbi Yisrael Binyamin Bassan [1701-1790] was the Av Beit Din of Reggio, Italy, son and successor of Rabbi Yeshayah Bassan, Av Beit Din of Reggio and grandson of the gaon Rabbi Binyamin son of Eliezer Kohen-Vitali (the Raba"ch), elder rabbi of Italy. The aforementioned father and grandfather were the primary teachers and disciples of Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzato, the Ramcha"l. Rabbi Yisrael Binyamin was also a disciple and close associate of the Ramcha"l's and studied Kabbalistic doctrine with him. He sent letters during the controversy with the Ramcha"l (refer to the book Iggerot HaRamcha"l U'Vnei Doro). For Rabbi Bassan's wedding day, the Ramcha"l composed a song in his honor called "Migdal Oz" (Leipzig, 1837). The Chid"a, during his mission to Italy, stayed in his home and saw important manuscripts there. (Refer to Ma'agal Tov and Shem Gedolim in the entry on Chessed L'Avraham). He was known as an important sage in his time, and his net was cast over all the Jewish communities in Italy and the South of France. He was also renowned as a doctor, for his general knowledge and knowledge of intercalation, and as one of the most prominent poets of his time. Several of his responsa were printed in his father's book, Lachmei Todah.
