Toldot Adam V'Chavah - Rabbeinu Yerucham. Kapust, 1808. Approbation by Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev
Toldot Adam V'Chavah - Sefer Meisharim, magnum opus of Rabbeinu Yerucham of Provence, one of the Early Authorities. Owner's signatures by Rabbi Yosef Jaffe [1845-1898], rabbi of Salant and Gorzd, on the first leaves.
The work includes: Toldot Adam V'Chavah in two parts - halachic rulings and personal conduct; and Sefer Meisharim - financial law in 32 tracks. Although his books are common, and cited in many important halachic works, their names are not used; they are known inclusively under their author's name, 'Rabbeinu Yerucham.' The back of the title page includes several important approbations including "The rabbi ... the gaon the G-dly Chassid ... Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev." This edition also contains an approbation by Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin and others.
Rabbeinu Yerucham ben Meshulam [1290-1350] was a disciple of the Ro"sh and of Rabbi Avraham ben Ismail - a disciple of the Rashb"a. He arrived in Spain after the expulsion from France. He was known to the Beit Yosef's maggid as "Yerucham Tamiri" - and according to the Chid"a, rabbis who composed a commentary to his book (such as Rabbi Shabtai Yonah and Rabbi Aharon Lafafa, author of Bnei Aharon) - passed away or their works were lost. The book became confused due to many transcriptions, and no one dared touch it to repair it.
