Mishnayot Zeraim, Slavuta - The Controversial Edition of the Slavuta Sha"s. Partial Copy
Volume of mishnayot from Seder Zeraim, with commentaries. Rabbi Shmuel Avraham Shapira Press, Slavuta, 1835. Partial copy. This is the rare controversial edition that roused the gaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger's strict gaze upon the famous printers, and the terrible punishment decreed on them.
Those years, a dispute broke out that shook up the Jewish world regarding the printing rights for Sha"s Talmud Bavli. The Slavuta printers, who had already managed to print three editions, began printing a fourth edition (this one). But at that very same time, the Vilna printers also began printing their own Sha"s. A huge controversy broke out, and leading rabbis took an active part in it. The Slavuta edition of Sha"s was not printed in its entirety, due to the blood libel on the brothers (the printers). Only a few tractates were printed, all of which are rare.
Originally: 68 leaf. The first 18 leaves are present in this volume, on bluish paper. 38.5 cm. The rest was completed in mishayot from a Vienna press (1830) with especially wide margins. 26-35 leaf, 41 cm.
Moderate condition. Worming perforations and tunnels. Adhesives to reinforce the margins of the title page and several additional leaves. Lacks in leaves 9-12. Old, blemished binding.
