Controversy: Regulations of the Ancient Community in Amsterdam - Sharp and Disparaging Booklet. Especially Rare
Takanos Fun Di Alte Kehillah - booklet by the new community in Amsterdam mocking the old community, with 102 amusing "regulations." Amsterdam, 1798 [chronogram: "משגעים הינו ביחד"]. Yiddish.
In 1796, approximately a year after the French conquered Holland, a group of Jews from the old community in Amsterdam split off and established itself as the "Adath Jeshurun" community. The people of the new community were "open-minded" and advocated changes in various customs. Over several years, there was much tension between the old and the new communities, and polemic works were published by both groups.
This is a rare booklet written in a sharp and especially mocking style, in which the leaders of the old community are presented in various "regulations" as utter idiots who raise public funds for their own use.
16 leaf, 17.5 cm. Thick, high-quality paper. Uneven page cuts.
Fine-very fine condition. Minimal agings stains. Not bound.
