Rabbinical Seminary Controversy: Letter from the Gaon Rabbi Meir Perlas to the Mahara"m Schick. 1776

"My eyes lit up at the sharp deliberation and extreme expertise ... I will not refrain from responding out of respect for [your] Torah honor and my love for [you]" (the Chatam Sofer)

Beautiful and important historic letter handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Meir Perlas, av beit din of Kruhlaye - beloved disciple of the Chatam Sofer, to the gaon hador Rabbi Moshe Schick - author of Mahara"m Schick, av beit din of Chust - leading disciple of the Chatam Sofer. Kruhlaye, 1877.

The content of the letter revolves around the sharp and bitter opposition of Hungarian rabbis - headed by the leader of the generation, Mahara"m Schick - to the rabbinical seminary in Budapest. That year, the Mahara"m Schick released a kol koreh against the seminary that was signed by the majority of Hungarian rabbis. He also wrote his famous responsum against the seminary (Shu"t Mahara"m Schick,  Orach Chaim, siman 308). In the end, the seminary opened in 1877. When news of this reached the Mahara"m Schick, he tore kriyah.

From the content of the letter, it appears that Mahara"m Schick requested that he lobby government ministers, but the writer refuses, stating, "If only it would be possible to cancel the seminary! (by) lobbying the government ministers, I would devote myself to this task, and no ice, snow nor rain would stop me. However, to act against the kingdom's ministers would create more problems than it would solve." He therefore recommends assembling rabbis to negotiate the issue. (Incidentally, Rabbi Meir Perlas was, until 1773, among the rabbis who sided with separating the communities. However, in 1773 he reversed his position and opposed the division, and even stayed with the status quo congregation. It appears from his response that the Mahara"m Schick wrote him mussar and rebuke at length. This may have been regarding his opinions which were in part opposed to those of many of the Hungarian rabbis).
