Silver Medal from the San Remo Conference. Holland, 1920

Medal minted in honor of the San Remo Conference held in Italy that same year. The medal was issued by the Zionist Movement in Holland and was designed by Chris van der Hoef (1875-1933). There were two versions of the medals, bronze and silver.

On the obverse side of the coin there is a relief depicting a modern Jew holding a hammer in his left hand, meeting a Tannaic Jew in a field of stalks. Appearing on the lower part are the years 3830-5680 (the year of the destruction of the second Temple, and the present year, 1920).

On the reverse side of the coin, the words "Im Eshkachech Yerushalayim (If I forget thee, Jerusalem) 10 Iyar 5680." Tribal symbols surrounding a star-of-David at center, with the Hebrew word "Tziyon" inside.

The San Remo Conference was an international conference held in Italy in 1920 attended by the WWI victors. The Conference decided to give the British a mandate over Palestine and also ratified the Balfour Declaration, thus validating the decision to give Palestine to the Jews.

Originally, two types of these medals were issued - bronze and silver. The silver medals were given, all or some, as a gift to dignitaries of the Zionist movement and they are extremely rare.

Diameter: 29 mm. 110 grams.

Very fine condition.
