50 Pfennig Banknote, Lodz Ghetto, 1940. Rated PMG 64
Banknote used by Jews in the Lodz ghetto, with a value of 50 pfennig.
In contrast to other ghettos where food distribution and other basic necessities were based on smuggling from outside the ghetto area, in Lodz this was almost entirely impossible due to the strict meticulousness of the German authorities. The Jews were completely dependent on the German authorities and the Judenrat in terms of anything that concerned food, medicine and other necessary supplies. As such, starvation and disease were rampant in the ghetto. Approximately 164,000 people were forced to live in a four square kilometer area, of which only 2.4 km were fit for residence. In 1944, the ghetto was liquidated by Nazi forces.
