The book Gillot Ha'aretz, Geography of the Land of Israel, by Rabbi Hillel Kahana, a student of Rabbi Meshulam Yishchar Horvitz of Stanislav. Botuchan-Bucharest, 1880.

In the copy before us, the wonderful colored map has been preserved, which is missing in some copies.

The book also contains interesting charts, plates and copperplate drawings.

On the cover appears a map of the Land of Israel (biblical) and next to it the globe, with a note: "Go and walk in the land and write it"; "And know the land".

The book deals with the description of the earth, from different aspects: geography, oceanography, chemistry, physics, astronomy, zoology, botany, anthropology, history and more. A book that at the time was considered the first of its kind in its scope and quality, and was written in a popular manner equal to every soul.

At the beginning of the book is printed a very interesting correspondence between the author Rabbi Kahana and Minister Moshe Montefiore, as well as "letters and exhortations and poems by Torah rabbis and famous poets".

At the end of the book is printed a 'table of artificial names' - a Hebrew-Yiddish dictionary for the concepts brought in the book.

"Dear reader! So far we have guided you and circled the earth once and come to here. In all the long way we walked your dress did not wear out from you and your feet did not get wet, we offered the bottoms of the earth and came to the sea the fire that was in it and the flame did not burn in you, we climbed the mountains spitting fire and you were not burned, We crossed rivers and seas, water tides did not wash you away and sea crises did not swallow you, and here you are today as strong and courageous in all your strength as the day you began your journey, indeed increasing and adding to the wisdom and knowledge that you gathered on your way" (from 'Sof Davar').

The copy is kept in good condition, and only the stains of time reveal to us how many years have passed since this scientific book was written until today...

ספר גלילות הארץ, גיאוגרפיה של ארץ ישראל, מאת הרב הלל כהנא, תלמידו של רבי משולם ישכר הורביץ מסטניסלב. בוטושאן-בוקרסט, תר"מ [1880].

בעותק שלפנינו השתמרה המפה הצבעונית הנהדרת, שחסרה בחלק מהעותקים.

הספר מכיל גם תרשימים מעניינים, לוחות וציורי פיתוח-נחושת.

על השער מופיעה מפת ארץ ישראל (התנ"כית) ולצדה הגלובוס, עם פתק: "לכו והתהלכו בארץ וכתבו אותה"; "וידעו את הארץ".

הספר עוסק בתיאור כדור הארץ, מבחינות שונות: גיאוגרפיה, אוקיינוגרפיה, כימיה, פיזיקה, אסטרונומיה, זאולוגיה, בוטניקה, אנתרופולוגיה, היסטוריה ועוד. ספר שבזמנו נחשב לראשון מסוגו בהיקפו ובאיכותו, ונכתב בצורה עממית השווה לכל נפש.

בפתח הספר נדפסה התכתבות מאוד מעניינת בין המחבר הרב כהנא והשר משה מונטיפיורי, וכן "מכתבים ומליצות ושירים מאת רבנים שרי תורה ומשוררים מפוארים".

בסוף הספר נדפס 'לוח מהשמות המלאכותיים' - מילון עברי-יידישאי למושגים שהובאו בספר.

"קורא נעים! עד כה נחינו אותך והקפנו את התבל פעם אחת ובאנו עד הלום. בכל הדרך הרב שהלכנו שמלתך לא בלתה מעליך ורגליך לא בצקו, הצענו תחתיות הארץ ובאנו לים האש אשר בתוכה ולהבה לא בערה בך, עלינו על ההרים יורקי האש ולא נכווית, עברנו נהרות וימים, שיבולת מים לא שטפוך ומשברי-ימים לא בלעוך, והנה עוד היום חזק ואמיץ בכל כוחך כביום ראשית מסעך, אכן הגדלת והוספת חכמה ודעת אשר אספת לך על דרכך זה" (מתוך 'סוף דבר').

העותק שמור במצב טוב, ורק כתמי הזמן מגלים לנו כמה שנים עברו מאז נכתב הספר המדעי הזה ועד היום...
