The photo was apparently taken between 1939, when, Mann emigrated to the US and settled at 65 Stockton Street in Princeton N.J, and 1942, when the Mann family moved to Los Angeles, CA.

Lotte Jacobi (Johanna Alexandra Jacobi Reiss), 1896 –1990, was a leading American portrait photographer and photojournalist, author of photographic portraits, considered a chronicle of an era. Since Lotte Jacobi moved to New York in 1935, she photographed most important artists, thinkers and activists of the 20th century, including Thomas Mann, Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Käthe Kollwitz, Lotte Lenya, Peter Lorre, Theodore Dreiser, Marc Chagall, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Edward Steichen. W.H. Auden, Martin Buber, W.E.B. DuBois, Robert Frost, Eleanor Roosevelt, J.D. Salinger, and Chaim Weizmann. During her lifetime she received numerous honors and was recognized as the greatest woman photographer of the twentieth century.
