RARE BYZANTINE GOLD FINGER RING WITH CARNELIAN INTAGLIO DEPICTING CHRISMON
Ca. AD 500 - 700.
A Byzantine 21.5 ct gold ring decorated with an intaglio depicting the Chi Rho monogram set in a star shaped solid bezel connected to a round hoop openwork with floral motifs. For similar see: Byzantium and the West jewellery in the First Millennium, n. 23, pg. 140-141. This piece has undergone X-ray fluorescence analysis to confirm the metallurgical content suggesting its ancient origin and lack of modern trace elements.
