ROMAN MERCURY STONE INTAGLIO IN GOLD RING
Ca. AD 100-300.
A red stone intaglio engraved with a left-facing portrait of Mercury (Greek Hermes), the god of communication, travel, trade, and theft. His head is flanked by caduceus staffs, one to each side. The intaglio is set in a high carat (20-22ct), possibly later gold ring with a carinated hoop, sculpted shoulders and a raised bezel cell with ribbed walls and granules.
