DAUNIAN POTTERY OLPE
Ca. 600 - 500 BC.A beautiful olpe featuring an elongated body, round mouth, and a high arching single handle. The body is decorated with bands of brown and reddish slip. An olpe was a type of oinochoe characterized by a mouth that is continuous rather than articulated with a spout. Daunians are identified by Greek authors and archaeological evidence as the inhabitants of northern Apulia; they emerge after ca. 700 BC as a distinct tribe. Daunian pottery vessels were built by hand, rather than thrown on a potter’s wheel, and are characterized by buff-coloured clay decorated with geometric patterns.Size: L:210mm / W:130mm ; 490gProvenance: Property of a central London Gallery; formerly in a South English estate collection; acquired in the 1990s from Andre de Munter, Brussels, Belgium; previously in and old European collection.
