GREEK HELLENISTIC OBSIDIAN LION HEAD FINIAL
Ca. 400 BC.A stunning obsidian finial, expertly incised to form the shape of a lion head. This polished. jet-black finial has a precisely wrought cylindrical base, which expands into a flowing, incised mane. The ears of the lion sit close to the head, with rounded eyes delicately carved into deep, angular sockets. The muzzle is simple yet elegant, conveying the form of the animal through the use of minimal linework.Size: 13.5mm x 19.3mm; Weight: 4.12gProvenance: From an important London collection of S.A.; previously in a Central London, Mayfair gallery; originally obtained from an old British collection formed in the 1980s.
