ENGLISH 2ND LIFE GUARDS OFFICER'S SWORD
Ca. 1848.
A very rare Household Cavalry officer's sword. The blade is un-fullered and engraved with rich symbolism, including a flaming grenade motif and the initials LG2, likely to denote the 2nd Regiment of Life Guards. On the inside of the ricasso is the makers mark showing that the weapon was made or sold by Andrews of 9 Pall Mall, London. This mark is known from other contemporary blades. The word proved is engraved on the back edge of the blade. The hilt is engraved with more flaming grenades and a lightning bolt motif. The handle has a fishskin grip but is missing its wire binding, and the guard retains its original tassel.
Size: 1022mm x 160mm; Weight: 750g
Provenance: Property of a European collector; Ex. British collection, 1970s-1990s.
