LEVANTINE TERRACOTTA OIL LAMP WITH A FACE ON THE HANDLE
Ca. AD 400 - 500.A Levantine terracotta oil lamp featuring a pointed oval body and a prominent decorated handle. The vessel displays a large filling hole with a double pronounced rim that is surrounded by a stylised wave motif. The handle has a moulded decoration depicting a stylised face. The reverse is adorned with phytomorphic motifs around the discoid foot. The terracotta oil lamp still has its original red pigment.Size: 110mm x 50mm; Weight: 85gProvenance: Private UK collection; previously acquired on the German art market in the 1990s.
